Education has been the main field of work for GMIN since it's inception. We identify existing schools with poor infrastructure and renovate/reconstruct bigger, better and brighter classrooms. This program is designed to put as many students in schools as soon as possible in a safer environment within their own local community where by children don't have to commute for hours just to get to school. Since 2009,
- GMIN has built 44 schools with more than 125 classrooms in 5 districts so far
- Each school with 3 classrooms and costs roughly USD $10,000
- GMIN projects are completely based on community consultation and participation
- GMIN uses local people and materials whenever possible for all of its construction projects
GMIN constructed a Vocational Training Center (VTC) in Dang, south western Nepal to teach a professional skill to rural Nepali women. The majority of rural Nepali women historically do not get a chance at an education. They are often needed to work on their fields or at home and are soon married off at a very early age to become mothers totally dependent on the income of their husbands.
GMIN wants to enable rural Nepali women to make their own decisions and guarantee their financial independence by learning a professional skill like carpet weaving. Thus supporting Nepali women to become economically free, which will help them improve
their own lives, the lives of their families and the conditions in their communities. These opportunities will help in creating conditions that ensure the next generation of women have equal access to basic education, are able to make informed decisions about their
futures, and are able to protect themselves from trafficking, sexual exploitation, HIV etc. Hence, GMIN built a Vocational Training Center to fulfill a mission of empowering women.
At the VTC, we are teaching local women how to weave carpets and also to sew clothes. The carpet weaving training takes 2 weeks to 3 months for the trainee to learn the basics of using the loom and the sewing training can take anywhere from 6 to 9 months for the trainee to become proficient.
